For this post, I wanted to do a question and answer type of post, so that my readers can learn a little bit more about me and my languages. In a few months or as my language learning journey changes, I will update this Q&A in most likely a new post, and I will link any changes at the bottom of this post.
Q: What’s your first language?
A: English
Q: What other languages do you speak?
A: Not really any at this time. I can get around in Spanish, if necessary. I can also say very basic phrases in Italian and French.
Q: What languages are you currently learning?
A: I am currently studying Spanish and French in school. Outside of school, when I have time, I like to study a little Portuguese or Italian.
Q: Do you take language classes in school?
A: I am currently in Spanish and French.
Q: What languages do you want to learn?
A: Many. I want to become fluent in Spanish, have an advanced level of French, and be at least conversational in Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, and possibly Romanian and Bulgarian. There are many others, but as of right now, those are at the top of the list.
Q: Is your major in languages?
A: As of this spring, yes, but I will be switching universities and majors to music, but I hope to keep Spanish as a minor.
Q: Do you want a career in languages?
A: I am contemplating, after my bachelor’s degree, getting a certificate in legal interpreting and becoming an interpreter in a legal setting. If that does not work out, I would love to work in an ELL classroom (especially if it involved music, my other love) or possibly as a freelance interpreter in any situation.
Q: Excluding school, how do you go about learning a language?
A: I am currently using a program called LingQ. It is a paid subscription service where you read and listen to different texts and dialogues in your target language. You can use the free plan, but you are not able to take advantage of saving new vocabulary or using flash cards. If you would like to learn more about LingQ, you can click here: http://www.lingq.com/?referral=hhaefele
Q: Will you ever make YouTube videos about languages and language learning?
A: I would love to, but first, I need to get comfortable with a video editing program as well as filming. My first videos will almost definitely be filmed on my iPad. I will probably have time to learn more about that process this summer, so maybe by that point…who knows.
Q: Will you be doing this post in other languages?
A: I want to translate it in to Spanish, and maybe another language or two once I am able to translate this text without copying and pasting into a translator. I want to translate it myself with the rare assistance of a bilingual dictionary.
Q: How did you get into languages?
A: In middle school, I took Spanish, because I was interested in it. I also took the class, because my middle school did not offer that many electives that I liked. Spanish was one of them. I did kind of stop learning Spanish for a few years, but I have started again, and I love it. As far as other languages, I am a complete language and geography nerd. I love languages, especially Romance languages (hence the name of this blog). I am also very partial to European and South American geography, so that has played a big role in my interest in languages.
