The C.P.E. Bach Sonata in A Minor is a significant unaccompanied work for the flute. It’s also an excellent piece to play on the alto flute.
And sure, you could use the original version since you’re playing alone. But the alto flute is in G, which means it will sound a fourth lower than the same melody on a C flute.
If you want to perform this piece on the alto flute and have it sound more authentic, it makes sense to transpose it. However, most flute players don’t know how to, which is where this edition comes in.
You’ll receive:
- Digital download of the score
- The movements in the original order
- Option to redownload a lost file
- A surprise
Why this edition?
When you buy any other edition of the C.P.E. Bach Sonata, it will be in the key of A minor. That works fine when playing a flute or even a piccolo.
But if you play that version on the alto flute, it will sound in E minor. Maybe that’s not a big deal, but it can be weird to hear as the player and as an audience member.
As I’ve started to play the alto flute more, I’ve realized how important it is to transpose parts. You can get away with not doing it for a solo piece, but it’s a nice challenge to learn the piece in a different written key.
Plus, if you do that, you can play a duet of sorts with someone who plays the C flute. Then, you don’t have to transpose on sight.
Also, this is a digital download, so you can print it as soon as you get the confirmation email. Then, you don’t have to wait for me to ship you the music.
Your arranger
Hi there, I’m Hannah, and I’m a flutist, arranger, and content creator. I’ve arranged a few solo flute works for the alto flute.
After about four years of playing the alto flute consistently, I’ve found that it’s nice to play things in the correct key. Even if you’re just playing alone, you never know when you might play with someone else, and having the right edition is crucial.
Who is this edition for?
This edition is for anyone who wants to learn or re-learn the C.P.E. Bach Sonata in A minor for the alto flute. It’s great for students as well as teachers who want to play with other people.
Flute choir directors who want to have a massive performance of the melody will also enjoy having this edition on hand.
