Where to Teach Private Music Lessons

Tell me if this sounds like you: you know you want to teach private music lessons, but you aren’t sure how to even get started. You don’t have experience teaching, and you don’t even know how you can manage the business side.

What if there was a way to start teaching this month without experience? What if there was a way to focus on students you WANT?

That’s exactly why I created the Where to Teach Workbook. I don’t want you to go through what I did…struggling to get students, wondering if I was doing something wrong, and not even knowing that I maybe wasn’t looking in the right places.

Get over the hump of starting your private teaching career with the Where to Teach Workbook. With this guide, you’ll know where to find students or teaching gigs that fulfill you so that you can start working within the next month.

The Where to Teach Workbook will teach you to:

  • Choose between in-person and online lessons (or choose both)
  • Determine if you should get a teaching job or start your own studio
  • Compare your options for where to teach
  • Know what to ask when interviewing for a teaching position

Right now, you’re struggling with how to get students. You don’t know if you should teach in person or online. And you’re wondering if it’s worth starting your own studio or if you should just get a job at the local music store.

Imagine if you could have your ideal teaching schedule full or students who love you and who you love. What if you didn’t have to deal with students that complain or that don’t even study your main instrument? Picture yourself loving getting ready to teach each week.

You can make that a reality with the Where to Teach Workbook.

Who am I to tell you this?

Hi! I’m Hannah Haefele, and I’m a freelance musician, educator, and entrepreneur. I’ve taught music since 2015 and private lessons specifically since 2019. When I first started private teaching, I wasn’t sure where to teach, so I got a job at a local music school.

The school had a lot of students and teachers, and I had the impression that I would be successful there. But I quickly realized that, while it was a great experience, it wasn’t the best place for me to grow my studio.

Sure, I got my first student a week after I started, but it took months to get my second student. It took another few months to get my third. And that was all the students I got.

It was no one’s fault because the school’s target students didn’t align with my target students. They didn’t have a ton of flute players looking for lessons, and there was a ton of competition for beginning piano lessons.

Still, no one should have to go through what I did. It took me months to realize that teaching for my own studio was a better option (FOR ME).

Now, I want to help you avoid that situation so that you aren’t sitting around waiting to get students. You should be doing what you love, TEACHING! Whether you teach a common instrument, like piano, or a rarer instrument, like the flute, you can make your career happen.

What You Get

In the Where to Teach Workbook, you’ll get access to the namesake workbook with explanations on different teaching locations PLUS brainstorming pages for topics like:

  • Where to teach in person lessons
  • Platforms to use for teaching online lessons
  • If you should get a teaching gig
  • Where to look for teaching jobs
  • What to consider when applying for or accepting a teaching job
  • If you should start your own teaching studio
  • How to market your studio
  • When you want/need to schedule private lessons
  • How you will price your lessons
  • What payment methods you will accept
  • If you should teach for multiple schools

You’ll also get a spreadsheet to use for planning your own studio and/or comparing the best schools to teach at. Use the sheets to:

  • Outline your current schedule so that you can decide when you can and can’t teach
  • Set aside time for relaxing because you don’t need to teach 24/7
  • Plan out your income based on your rate and the number of lessons you teach
  • Figure out if your rate is enough
  • A comparison chart to determine which school or schools are best for you

The workbook also comes with a studio contract template that I’ve used in my own studio so that you don’t have to create one from scratch. It covers sections like:

  • Your teaching philosophy
  • General policies
  • Gear requirements
  • Student requirements
  • Signup and schedule process
  • Payment processing (because you shouldn’t teach without getting paid)
  • Payment methods (don’t just take anything)
  • Your available lesson formats
  • Contact policy (you need business hours)
  • Teacher contact information

Lastly, you’ll get a checklist of questions to ask if you decide to apply for a teaching gig at a school or store. That way, you can get the best idea possible about teaching there so that you can decide if it’s the right place for you.

Let’s recap:

  • Where to Teach Workbook ($37 value)
  • Studio Planning Sheet ($15 value)
  • Private Lessons Contract Template ($27 value)
  • Teaching Gig Interview Questions Checklist ($12 value)
  • $10 off your first 1:1 consultation ($10 value)

Total: $101

Other current music majors and recent grads can use this guide to start their career sooner rather than later. Instead of waiting for your perfect student to find you, you can learn where to put yourself out there to help get students.

This guide is also for current private teachers who can’t seem to get enough students (or students, period). You may not be teaching in the right environment, so this workbook will help clear that up for you.

College music professors can download this workbook to use with their private students. If your students want to learn more or if you’re teaching a pedagogy or entrepreneurship class, this workbook is a great supplement.

If you’re a musician and want to increase and/or diversify your income, you need the Where to Teach Workbook. Teaching doesn’t have to be a full-time gig, but you should know where you should teach to make the most of it.

How does this work?

When you finish going through the workbook, you can implement it. You can search for teaching jobs or start marketing your own studio. Then, you can start finding students who want to learn from you and work with you.

I already have teaching experience. Is this right for me?

The workbook can help aspiring AND current private music teachers. If you aren’t getting as many students as you want, or the students you do get aren’t the right fit, this guide will help you switch up your career so that you can get students you enjoy.

I’m still in school. Do I need to dedicate a lot of time to this?

The Where to Teach Workbook is PERFECT if you’re still in school. Aside from choosing where to teach, one of my biggest regrets was when I started. It took until my masters degree to start teaching regular private lessons.

If you want to avoid getting a day job or having to supplement your teaching income with other things, you should start now. This system will help you avoid all of those problems.

I want to teach [insert your instrument here]. Will this work for me?

You can use the tools inside the workbook and bonuses no matter what instrument you teach. Whether you teach piano, flute, or even the accordion, this system works for you. That way, you can enjoy teaching and control your schedule.

What if teaching isn’t my main career goal?

Many musicians want to become performers, and some don’t want to teach. If you know you don’t want to teach private lessons, this system might not work for you.

However, teaching private lessons is a great way to start or grow your music career. People will always need private lessons, so you can always find students. This guide will help you know where to look for those perfect students.

Do I need to be good with technology?

Absolutely not! You can easily download the PDF files from the email, and you can access the Google Sheets with a Google account.

Don’t have a Google account? Send me an email from or with your purchase email, and I’ll send you an Excel file.

How long can I access the files?

You can download them once and access them for a lifetime. And if you can’t find the files, you can redownload them from the initial email you receive.

If you can’t find that email, send me a message with the email you used to purchase the workbook (so that I can confirm your purchase), and I’ll send you a new email with the files.

Can I get a refund?

Due to the digital nature of this product, there will be no refunds after purchase. However, I will work with you to ensure that you’re happy with the product.

I’m still not sure if this is right for me. How can I learn more?

I’d love to talk more with you about the Where to Teach Workbook! Please send me a message through my contact page or through a DM on Instagram (@hannahbflute).

Important Flute Repertoire

The flute is one of the oldest instruments, so there’s a lot of flute repertoire out there for all members of the flute family. However, a lot of those works aren’t as important as a select few.

Download this sheet to refer to when you want to explore some important works from the flute repertoire. The list is organized by time period, so you can choose a work from your favorite style or a style that you want to work on.

Put this sheet in your flute notebook or on your desk, and refer to it whenever you need some rep inspiration.
