Flute Fingering Chart

Whether you’re new to the flute or need to brush up on some of the notes, you need a good flute fingering chart. In this chart, I cover the entire standard range of the flute with some popular alternate fingerings.

Note: I used Bret Pimentel’s Note Image Generator and Fingering Diagram Builder.

If you’d like to look at fingerings specifically for piccolo, head to the Piccolo Fingering Chart.

Without further ado, here’s the flute fingering chart. These fingerings work on all different members of the concert flute family.

First Octave Fingerings

Here are the most common fingerings for the first octave of the flute.

Alternate Bb

Bb thumb

Alternate C# (C# trill)

Second Octave Fingerings

Most of the flute fingerings are the same between the first and second octaves. However, some are different, so here are all of the notes for this octave of the flute.

Alternate Bb

Bb thumb

Alternate C# (C# trill)

Third Octave Fingerings

Once you get into the third octave, you need to reference different fingerings. While you can use harmonics, these new fingerings offer a clearer tone in the high register of the flute.

Alternate F#/Gb

(Pinky is usually off)

Come back later for fourth octave fingerings and more alternate fingerings.
